Care for Endodontically Treated Teeth

After having a root canal appointment, it is best to minimize the amount of chewing or biting on the treated tooth for a few days.

Within one to two weeks of the root canal treatment being completed, it is necessary to see your dentist for a permanent filling. This will protect the seal of the root canal treatment. Often a crown is necessary to help prevent a fracture from occurring.

Do not delay having the permanent filling placed in a root canal treated tooth, as this could lead to complications that require either retreatment of the root canals or possibly extraction. Contact our office if there is any reason you cannot have a permanent filling placed on an endodontically treated tooth.

Insist on the best, keep it real, and save your teeth.

Tenderness

It's typical after an endodontic treatment appointment, your tooth and surrounding gum may be tender for a few days. Do not chew on the tooth for several days. In the meantime, continue with your regular home dental care of flossing and brushing.

Pain Medication Hand-out

Please review and follow the pain medication hand-out. Do not wait to see how the tooth will feel after the 'freezing' local anaesthetic wears off.

It is not recommended to drink any alcohol while taking the pain and anti-inflammatory medications. If the pain or swelling cannot be controlled with the recommended medications, call our office immediately for assistance at 604.274.3499.

Your Natural Tooth

Research shows that endodontically treated teeth can be expected to last as long as other natural teeth. In the long-term the cost of saving a tooth with endodontic and restorative treatment is less expensive than maintenance of a bridge or implant. In addition, no restorative device can replace a real tooth for function or aesthetics.

Dental Routine

As with all natural teeth, it is important to brush and floss daily and to continue with regular check-ups and cleanings.
